Equities
Equity securities represent a unit of ownership in a corporation or other similarly organized entity. With equity ownership generally comes some type of special right, such as the right to exercise voting privileges in corporate policy decisions or the right to receive periodic dividend payments. The equity securities of corporations and unit trusts are issued, traded and redeemed using the facilities of a central exchange that links the suppliers and users of capital in a transparent market.
Barlow manages a global equity portfolio that is comprised of diversified holdings in the equity securities of corporations and unit trusts, such as income, business and royalty trusts, and that are listed on stock exchanges in Canada and the United States. As an "all-cap" manager we invest in all capitalization segments of a market - small, mid and large.
Our global exposure comes from investment in American Depository Receipts (ADRs) or American Depository Shares (ADS) which represent US dollar denominated share ownership in overseas companies. ADRs and ADS allow us to buy shares in these overseas companies without incurring offshore transaction and custody costs, or carry significant currency risk.
